Francis Fonseca Contemplates Political Retirement in Belize

Freetown Area Representative is contemplating political retirement.  Francis Fonseca, a stalwart member of the PUP, is contemplating whether this term will be his last. The Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology has served in the house since 2003 and has remained undefeated. However, Fonseca says that his time in Freetown may soon be coming to an end.

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education, Culture, Science: “I haven’t made any decision. But it’s no secret. I think last time I was uncut Jules asked me about this and I said to him very frankly and openly that the last time I ran I really said to the people of Freetown that would be my last time running. I’ve been doing this for 20 years now, 20 years this year. I’ve been elected five times by the people of Freetown. I continue to enjoy their support and confidence but at some point you have to move on. But I haven’t made a final decision yet. Obviously that’s something I have to discuss with the party and the prime minister and the leader of the party. So I will do that in the months ahead and make a final decision in good due time.”

Fonseca was one of only six PUP representatives nationwide to retain his seat in the National Assembly in the 2008 election when the PUP lost.
