Free secondary education will soon be available to students in far-reaching areas of the country. In April of last year, the Ministry of Education rolled out a project that provides free education to students from four high schools on the south side of Belize City. The project covers tuition, books, uniforms, school bags, and lunch. The Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca, says that since the implementation of the project, attendance has significantly improved. As a result of the success in Belize City, the government of Belize is looking to take this approach to the south of the country at the start of the new fiscal year. The project will be piloted at secondary schools in Stann Creek and Toledo. The Area Representative of Toledo West, Oscar Requena, explains that this will significantly impact the lives of the students in his constituency.
