With summer upon us, the Freetown Summer Camp, an initiative spearheaded by Area Representative Francis Fonseca and the Freetown Committee, will once again be hosted for children of Belize City. For two decades, this summer program has been a cornerstone of the community, offering children ages 5 to 15 a memorable and enriching experience every year. The camp will be hosted at the Belama Community Park giving children an opportunity to stay off their gadgets and remain active throughout the holiday. Belize City Councillor, Eluide Miller told us about the expectations surrounding this year’s camp.

Eluide Miller, Belize City Councillor: “So this is a nice space that allows for the kids to recreate in a safe and comfortable environment. And so we’re very excited. We have a number of activities we’re offering to these kids this year at absolutely no cost to them. These activities include basketball, football, arts and crafts and we’re adding a new activity this year which is self-defense and karate. And so we’re very excited about offering that to those kids this year. Of course, we’re catering to kids between ages 5 to 15 years of age and each year we cater to just about 60 kids and so we look forward to having a great level of participation this year. We have over 30 kids registered already and so I would encourage residents who are interested in having their kids participate in the summer camp to register them as soon as possible.”
In efforts to ensure every child in the community can participate, the committee is making all necessary arrangements to aid with the transportation to and from the venue. Councillor Miller shared the details with us.
Eluide Miller, Belize City Councillor: “We are also doing pick up from the Freetown Community Office which is located at the corner of Hopkins and 4th Street in the Kings Park area and this is really to facilitate the participation of those kids who reside in the Kings Park area and might not be able to travel all the way to the Belama area for the summer camp and so those kids will be picked up from that office at 8 o’clock a.m. each day and then they will be dropped off at around 12:45 p.m. each day at the close of the summer camp.”
