Frontline health care workers to get care package from government

The government has promised frontline health care workers a care package, and this will come in the form of an ex-gratia payment. CEO in the Minsitry of Health, Dr George Gough explained more about this.

Dr.George Gough,CEO, Ministry of Health : Obviously we were battling with the idea of the overtime because historically we have been short in the past with different professional groups in healthcare so the overtime had become a bit monstrous and the last three four months we had tried to contain it and a circular had gone out to say only twenty hours but we found out that at least 60-70% were doing more than the twenty hours. Again the Ministry of Fiance was very gracious to retract on the circular and put out a new circular saying ‘okay not twenty hours we will pay you forty hours.’ So we went back and we said okay June, July, August who made more than twenty hours recalculate and we are now paying them their difference on the twenty hours and now I’m pleased to say that in a discussion with the Financial Secretary yesterday the Ministry of Finance has managed to put it’s hand on a very limited amount of money but yet substantial for us to look at the list from every region, from every clinic, from every flu clinic, from every institution that has contributed somebody on the front line when it comes to the healthcare system and also with Karl Huesner to be able to come up with a list for us to be no later than months end in September – I am begging at least two weeks because it takes a lot of due diligence for us to be able to pay that payment that the Prime Minister had promised to the front line healthcare workers.”
