Fugitive Ellis Meighan Returned to Belize After 14 Months on the Run

Ellis Meighan is now on Belizean soil after having absconded the country some 14 months ago.  The 33-year-old was escorted today by two agents of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and handed over to the authorities. Love News understands that the wanted fugitive came in on a United Airlines flight from Houston, Texas, at around one o’clock this afternoon.  The name, Ellis Meighan, is no stranger in the news cycles as he has been involved in multiple criminal matters.  The most recent, however, is a murder that occurred in April 2024 on the Placencia Road near mile twenty-two.  In this case, 32-year-old, Roy Lee Burgess was killed and Maia James injuries.  A manhunt ensued for Meighan, but it was just a matter of time that the authorities confirmed that he had fled to the United States.  The then Police Commissioner, Chester Williams, told the media in July 2024 that they had begun the extradition process with counterparts in the United States.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police (July 10, 2024): “We have done all that we can in terms of submitting the relevant documents to the US authorities. It’s a matter for them to go through the process now and see whether or not they’re going to send him back. We have had instances before where they have returned wanted persons to us. So I’m optimistic that the same is going to be done. We are aware of that. That information reached me and the police officer in question who it is alleged transporting out of Placencia has been transferred from there. I wish I could do more, but the truth is that we don’t have the proof to ascertain that he did it. So the least I could have done was to get him out of Placencia because we don’t want to have a situation where we have police officers who are enabling criminals from Belize City or anywhere else to go into Placencia and do what they need to do and then facilitate them out. That cannot happen. So that officer has been removed from Placencia. And then if there is anybody who would have information to confirm that he in fact transported Elis Meighan out of Placencia I will be more than willing to have that and then we can proceed from there.”

About eleven years ago, Meighan was remanded for the attempted murder of Carlos “Zimbab” Abraham, a reputed “general” of the George Street gang. The incident occurred in November 2014 when Abraham was shot while in his vehicle at a tire shop on Lake View Street in Belize City. Meighan and a 17-year-old minor were charged with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm, and dangerous harm.  Meighan was processed at the police station, remains on remand and is expected to be arraigned later this week.
