Fundraisers Launched to Support Critically Injured Officer Karen August

Police and the San Ignacio/Santa Elena Town Council are teaming up to hold fundraisers to support Police Constable Karen August, who was the victim of a hit-and-run early Monday morning. PC August was on the back of a motorcycle being driven by another officer when a vehicle struck them both. August, mother to a four- and seven-year-old, was severely injured and is currently listed in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. The SI/SE Town Council is hosting a dollar drive to collect funds to assist with her treatment. The police department is also hosting a barbecue sale this weekend as part of the fundraising efforts. Today, Town Councilor Aaron Mai issued a heartfelt plea to the public and the business community to support the initiative.

Aaron Mai, Councilor, SISE Town Council: “We believe that the town council and the police department has always had a very close relationship within the Twin Towns and she is one of us. She is a mother, she’s a single mother and so her children she was not able to reach home to see her kids and so it is with this empathy that is inside of us and of course a community cry and because we are love in the Twin Towns and we support each other we thought that it was a very important and vital that we step in to support the police officer because she is in need of financial help. She has broken her hips in multiple areas I have come to understand but not only that she’s in critical condition and she has kids at home waiting for her to come home and so if we can get the finances then she might be able to get better medical help that she really needs. I’m also working very closely with the police department and of course you know I have thrived on integrity and honest and so whatever money is collected it can be trusted fully that Officer August will receive 100% of the donations that comes to us. Of course if you want to donate also you can meet the police department at the Cayo Welcome Center this Friday as we are doing a bbq sale to raise funds for the officer.”

Anyone wishing to support the dollar drive can contact Councilor Mai at 615-5272.
