Garbage Crisis Threatens Rio On Pools and Big Rock Waterfall

A growing garbage problem is now threatening the natural beauty of two of Belize’s most popular inland attractions, the Rio On Pools and the Big Rock waterfall in the Cayo District.  Residents say that while recent infrastructure improvements have made the area more accessible and boosted tourism, the surge in visitors is now placing a strain on the environment. On busy days, particularly weekends, locals estimate that more than one hundred people visit the sites, resulting in a steady accumulation of garbage.  With limited waste management systems in place, tour guides and nearby lodge owners have been forced to step in to clean up the area, often taking on the role of sanitation workers just to maintain the appeal of the destinations for visitors.  Residents are now issuing an urgent appeal for greater responsibility among those visiting the sites.  One concerned citizen, Alva Tut, spoke with Love News on the need for more civic pride.

Residents are calling for stronger public awareness and cooperation to ensure that Rio On Pools and Big Rock remain clean, safe, and open for future generations.
