GOB and NGOs Partner for Massive Conservation Effort

The Government of Belize and two NGOs are teaming up for a massive conservation effort. Government, Re:wild (ree-wild), and the Nature Conservancy will together implement a strategy to protect the nation’s natural ecosystems and biodiversity in perpetuity. At the same time, this effort will support human development. The basic course of action will see a new model for conservation, which outlines how protected land will be taxed and how the sales of carbon credits will be distributed. A joint release explains that Belize will collect an additional twenty million dollars in land taxes for fifty years. At the same time, Government will have the exclusive rights to determine the use and disposition of a portion of the proceeds of the sale of carbon credits from those lands. That could translate into many more millions of dollars in revenue. TNC says that it will work with GOB to secure investments of twenty million dollars over ten years to improve regenerative agriculture and climate-resilient land management in the Belize Maya Forest region, an area that covers two hundred thirty-six thousand acres.
