An investigation into recent police brutality allegations is ongoing. The incident involved a sixteen-year-old minor student who was verbally and physically assaulted by police officers in Orange Walk. The minor’s attorney explained that this behaviour is unconstitutional and called for the Government to take action into this situation. The Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, explained that his ministry condemns these actions.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “Everyone knows, Giovanna, that we have had a zero tolerance approach since taking office a year and a half ago. When it comes to police abuse and brutality, we take every single case seriously. We make sure that it gets to the Professional Standards Branch. We make sure they get medical treatment to be assessed by a doctor to in fact determine if there are any injuries. In this particular instance, I understand that the investigation is already underway in relation to that particular incident. From what I’ve been told, there are no visible injuries. We’d have to look at the medical legal form to see if there’s any, anything to determine if there was in fact injury to the minor and, again, that is something that’s going to be dealt with completely separate from whatever he has been changed with.”
