The government is looking to eliminate import duty on some equipment. This move is one of several to foster investments in Belize. Agriculture Minister, Jose Abelardo Mai, gave us an update on that and the agro-business sector in the country.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture: “Right now we have made the decision at the Cabinet level that all machinery that comes into the country used for processing does not pay now import duty because we need to encourage people to start to process. The milk producers right now I think it’s Western Dairies they have just now imported equipment to start doing UHT. They’re constructing the building right now so in the next couple months you will see Western Dairies milk with UHT which is what gives you so much days of shelf life so that is going to improve. We’re seeing other people doing smaller things. We’re looking at soursop processing soursop people have brought in equipment free of import duty and those are the things that we’ll have to do.”
