The Government has partnered with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to reduce the occurrences of wildfires in Belize’s savanna areas. Through a collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management, GOB has launched a project titled the “Traditional Savanna Fire Management Readiness Proposal”. The project will focus on addressing key challenges that affect the environment due to fire frequencies in the dry season. CEO in the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Osmond Martinez says the initiative will seek to improve forest degradation, loss of biodiversity, and the livelihoods of the vulnerable population that are affected by wildfires.
Martinez added that the project will facilitate emissions reductions in the agriculture, forestry, and land-use sectors in Belize.
