GOB Looking to Become More Innovative in the Energy Sector

Minister Orlando Habet also signalled that Belize will need to become more self-sufficient in the energy sector. Minister Habet adds that implementing the use of water or solar-generated energy, will also significantly reduce the country’s carbon emissions.

Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development: “They’re trying to see that we advocate for the Ministry of Finance to be encourage to allow maybe some changes in policy in regards to taxation and duties so that more electric vehicles can come in and they use less gas guzzling vehicles. The transport sector I think we have heard how the Ministry of Transport is asking that we modernize or at least get newer buses instead of the older buses that consume a lot of fuel. The energy sector going solar maybe looking at the potential for wind energy, for wave energy and whatever we can do in the energy sector. We have been importing so much from CFE in Mexico that we have to become energy independent. Listen when something happens in Mexico and they run short they won’t cut off Cancun for example they’ll cut off Belize so we have to become energy independent.”
