GOB May Raise Taxes to Meet Teachers’ Salary Demands

The Government is contemplating an increase in taxes to accommodate the teachers’ demand for a salary increase. As the teachers continue to demand an eight point five salary increase, Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight, confirmed the Prime Minister’s comments last week, saying that they are not in aposition to give the unions a full 8.5 percent. According to Waight, the ministry is always crunching numbers and the only way to give the teachers what they want would be to increase taxes. He noted that it would not be the ideal solution, but it is one that has to be contemplated if the joint unions refuse to further negotiate. We will keep following this story.
