Government and UNICEF Partner to Support Children with Disabilities

The Government of Belize and UNICEF Belize have teamed up to develop a situational analysis on children with disabilities. The Ministry of Human Development is leading the venture initiative as part of the country’s efforts to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The ministry notes that census data shows that there are over five thousand six hundred children in Belize living with disabilities, many of whom are underserved. The Ministry added that the analysis will help to advance the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that no child is left behind. Speaking on the analysis, Minister of Human Development Dolores Balderamos Garcia said quote, “Inclusion is not just an ideal; it is a necessity. The Situational Analysis on Children with Disabilities represents a significant step toward creating a Belize that embraces and empowers every child. Together with UNICEF, we are developing evidence-based solutions to ensure that every child, regardless of ability, can reach their full potential,” end of quote. The last situational analysis on Belize’s children with disabilities was done in 2013.
