This morning the Government of Belize and the UN Migration Agency (IOM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a National Migration and Development Policy for Belize, which is expected to guide Belize’s management of its multidimensional migration dynamics. Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development and Immigration Godwin Hulse signed on behalf of the Government of Belize. Meanwhile, Marcelo Pisani, the IOM Regional Director for Central America, North America, and the Caribbean, signed on behalf of IOM. Edmund Zuniga, the CEO of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Immigration said that migration affects everyone, therefore, the migration policy is not a matter solely for the Immigration Department. Pisani noted that the project is part of IOM’s response to the needs of governments concerning migration and development. The development of the national policy will be led by the Government of Belize through a Steering Committee chaired by the Department of Immigration and Nationality Services. Meanwhile, IOM will be in charge of the overall management and expedition of the project implementation.
