Government Distributes Over 100 Parcels of Land in Bay Leaf Palm Estates Project

Government Distributes Over 100 Parcels of Land in Bay Leaf Palm Estates Project

Over one hundred parcels of land were distributed today as part of the Bay Leaf Palm Estates project.  The project is the continued efforts by the government to ensure that Belizeans are secured with land and house.  Minister of Lands, Cordel Hyde that the project was made possible through the acquisition of land from a private owner.

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Prime Minister: “This is as good as it gets because this is a wonderfully beautiful magical area as you can see and it’s going to be a really nice planned community and it’s absolutely needed because it’s hard to get land in Belmopan, hard to get land in those surrounding areas and so what they did which I thought was beautiful was that they are giving 75% of the 128 lots I believe to residents from this village from Armenia lots of young people who want land and then the balance 25% will be given to a combination of public officers and persons from surrounding communities who don’t have land. So it’s going to be a really integrated community, a really beautiful thing and this is what we do. We don’t often have ceremonies to mark these things. We do this almost every day but you know it’s always a good thing when you are able to come and do this. In case of this, this was private land. We had to actually purchase the land. The minister had the vision some time ago to actually have us purchase some land in because it’s a really pristine area. I mean we’re on a hill, I mean it’s like it doesn’t get any better and so we purchased the land some time ago and then we went about surveying it and through the minister’s office we were able to identify a lot of first-time landowners who have been banging on our doors to get land. “

Reporter: How much was paid for the acquisition?

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Prime Minister: “I think we paid somewhere close to 500,000 maybe. I mean land is very expensive and in short order the value of this land will just go to the roof because it’s goes to Belmopan. And I mean it’s a really bustling, looks like a village and it’s called a village, but it’s really bustling here. So what we are really doing is transferring the wealth to first time landowners, transferring the wealth to young people. They are going to pay a discounted rate, a social rate for the land, but then this land will be valued 20, 30, 40 times more than they would have paid for it. It isn’t often a government gets to do that on a scale like this for ordinary people. Often times when we’re in the news it’s because we’re paying off some lawsuit or paying off some old bill or paying off some person who really don’t deserve to get paid. What you’re doing here is actually transferring wealth to ordinary people.”

The Bay Leaf Palm Estates is in the Cayo South division led by Minister of Housing, Julius Espat.  According to Minister Espat, Area Representatives should delve beyond the divide of their constituencies to see how they can improve the lives of the residents.

One individual who expressed profound gratitude for the land distribution project is Esperanza Arriaza, who was a part of the ministry’s team that pushed for the Bay Leaf Estates project.

Under this project, 122 first time land owners received land documents.  Tomorrow we’ll tell you of another land and housing project in the pipeline for Belmopan.
