The Government of Belize today officially launched a feasibility study for the proposed Punta Gorda Hospital, marking a significant step toward strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to medical services in the Toledo District. Area Representative for Toledo East, Dr. Osmond Martinez, said the study will assess the scope, cost, and design options for the proposed facility, which is intended to improve healthcare delivery in Belize’s southernmost district. Martinez noted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to long-term, sustainable development in the south, particularly in critical social services such as health. The launch brought together key government and local stakeholders, including Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard, Area Representative for Toledo West Oscar Requena, Punta Gorda Mayor Carlos Galvez, senior public officers, and technical consultants engaged to carry out the study. Minister of Health Kevin Bernard, in his address, emphasized the importance of careful planning, noting that the feasibility study will ensure that any future hospital development is aligned with both current and projected healthcare needs of the Toledo population.
Mayor of Punta Gorda Carlos Galvez also welcomed the initiative, describing the proposed hospital as a development that would significantly improve the quality of life for residents of the town and surrounding communities. Galvez said improved access to modern healthcare services would reduce the need for long-distance travel for medical care and enhance overall wellbeing in southern Belize.
The day’s agenda included technical discussions between Ministry of Health teams and consultants, walkthroughs of existing hospital facilities, alternate site visits, and an onsite wrap-up session to outline the next steps in the process. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Martinez stressed that while the feasibility study does not guarantee immediate construction, it lays a critical foundation for advancing the project. He explained that the exercise forms part of a phased, strategic approach to strengthening healthcare delivery and infrastructure across the Toledo District.
