And while the opposition was very critical of the Briceno administration what they did not harp on today was the bloated contracts that they reportedly left behind prior to the elections. According to Prime Minister Briceno the government is exploring legislations to see what can be done about those contracts.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “On the issue of these contracts we’re taking a look at everything and yes we’re seeing if there’s the possibility of using the legislation to be able to do that. Former Prime Minister Barrow as a master in passing kind of laws like that but we have to ensure that we do not go contrary to the rights of citizens and that we at all times respect their rights despite the fact that we don’t agree with them or with the contracts that they have. So we’re studying it, we just want to make sure that when we make whatever decision that it is the right one and not just be hasty and making a lot of noise and then we go to court and then we end up having to pay what ? I mean it could be millions of dollars that we have to pay with all of these people that the UDP has given ironclad cases.”
