Government Moves to Create National Emergency Switchboard System

The Government of Belize is moving toward the creation of a centralized national switchboard system designed to streamline how emergency calls and public complaints are handled across the country. The initiative, which is being led by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), aims to modernize and unify the way Belizeans access help during emergencies.  Under the proposed system, all emergency and critical service calls would flow through a single national switchboard station. From there, trained operators, supported by emerging technologies, would direct complaints or reports to the appropriate agencies, whether police, fire service, health authorities, or municipal bodies. The goal, according to NEMO Minister, Henry Usher, is to reduce response time, eliminate confusion about who to call, and ensure that every report is logged, tracked, and addressed.  Speaking on the initiative, Minister Usher revealed that the team is exploring the incorporation of artificial intelligence to make the system even more efficient. 

Henry Charles Usher, Minister of Public Service: “We’re working along with the police department, along with the we’re trying to bring in now the Domestic Violence Unit from the police department as well to have one switchboard so that when a call goes in it goes to that one switchboard and then that person will be able to direct that call to somebody else. Because right now we might have a phone line at the Queen Street police station, one at Raccoon Street, one here, one there, we want to have one switchboard in Belmopan that is able to direct everybody to where they need to go and utilizing AI as well, utilizing the modern technologies to be able to determine where the person is because sometimes when a person calls 911 or even in the Domestic Violence Unit they only know they’re in a particular part of Belize City or wherever, but they can’t say exactly what street they’re on. So this will be able to pinpoint exactly where they can be so that the first responders can get there as fast as possible.”

Love News understands that the proposal is still in the planning stage, but officials say it forms part of the government’s broader push to adopt digital solutions across public services and build a more responsive, coordinated national emergency system.
