The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) is taking significant steps to update Belize’s building regulations, aligning them with international standards. Today, Minister of MIHD, Julius Espat, introduced amendments to the Belize Building Act aimed at enhancing safety, quality, and overall construction standards across the country. The proposed changes come after a comprehensive five-year collaboration between the Ministry and the International Code Council (ICC) to reshape the Belize Building Code. The proposed amendments are designed to address areas of construction, demolition, and the movement of structures, ensuring that these activities adhere to more stringent safety and quality criteria. Minister Espat emphasized that these adjustments to the Building Act are in line with international best practices and are focused on safeguarding the public and improving the country’s infrastructure.
Espat also clarified that contrary to speculations the updated regulations will not result in higher construction costs. He also noted that with greater responsibility, the Central Building Authority (CBA) will need to see significant investments.
Espat underscored that the ministry will undergo a year of consultation with stakeholders before implementing the amendments to the Belize Building Act.
