The Government of Belize is pushing full steam ahead with its plan to construct a 60-megawatt solar power plant. Last year, the Briceno Administration signed a seventy-seven million U.S. dollars loan agreement with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to construct the plant, and an accompanying battery energy storage facility. It is a plan that would lessen the country’s energy dependence, and emissions by increasing renewable energy sources. On Saturday, Prime Minister John Briceno provided an update on the project, saying that a location for the plant has been identified.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “What we have done working together with BEL we have – BEL had identified an area by Bomba where they want to put the first solar plant. So we have identified that. We’re in the process of working on the plans for it and we hope and expect that by next year July we should be inaugurating the first solar plant which will be made up of 20 megawatts.”
The funds were provided through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).
