As the Caribbean continues to experience increased sargassum activity, the Government of Belize is taking early and proactive steps to prepare for the 2026 season through the National Sargassum Task Force (STF). Co-chaired by the Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations and the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, the STF is coordinating a national response focused on five priority coastal destinations: San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Seine Bight, Hopkins, and Placencia. To boost operational readiness, the government is acquiring a Barber Beach Rake to strengthen shoreline management, while also providing funding for replacement parts to keep the Placencia Village Council’s beach rake fully operational. A scoping assessment has also been launched in Caye Caulker and San Pedro to evaluate long-term, scalable sargassum management solutions, including improved logistics, disposal options, and potential circular economy approaches. The STF is utilizing the Sargassum Monitoring (SAMTool) platform, a satellite-based system that provides near-real-time detection and forecasting to help authorities anticipate landings and deploy resources more effectively. Specialized equipment has also been procured, including a Weedoo TC-3014 workboat for shallow-water removal and a DESMI Tri-turtle unit designed to collect sargassum near shore without disturbing sand. Officials say deployment will expand gradually as additional equipment becomes available, with lessons learned from pilot operations guiding national rollout. While sargassum influxes cannot be prevented, the STF says their impacts can be reduced through early planning, strong coordination, and collaboration among government agencies, local authorities, tourism stakeholders, and coastal communities.
