Government Steps In After Placencia Dump Site Access Concerns

The Placencia Village Council has issued an update acknowledging swift intervention by central government, following public concerns raised over deteriorating conditions at the Placencia Municipal Dump Site.  One week ago, the council had released a strongly worded statement highlighting what it described as years of neglect and insufficient support from central government. According to the Council, the access road to the dump site had deteriorated so severely that garbage trucks were repeatedly getting stuck, causing hours-long delays, increased fuel and labor costs, and mechanical strain on limited equipment.  Twenty-four hours later, the council updated its situation report, indicating that the Ministry of Rural Transformation along with Area Representative Rodwell Ferguson had responded promptly regarding access to the dump site. Speaking to Love News, the Director of Local Government, Clifford King, confirmed that the Government of Belize has stepped in to address the situation at the dump site.  We understand that Prime Minister John Briceño was also referenced in the Council’s communications, for sustained support to ensure long-term waste management solutions for the tourism-dependent community.
