Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam has officially issued a writ declaring July 2 as Nomination Day and July 17 as the date for the bi-election. The writ is the official document confirming the dates of these two events for the Toledo East Division. The venue for Nomination Day will be the Magistrate’s Court in Punta Gorda. Meanwhile, the Elections and Boundaries Department has officially appointed three public officers to operate as Returning Officer and Election Clerks. The Returning Officer will be Therese Martinez, the Assistant Comptroller of Customs at the Big Creek Port while the two election clerks are Marion Nolberto from the Ministry of Education and Venancio Ack from the Ministry of Finance. The Toledo East area has been functioning without an Area Representative since the passing of the late Mike Espat on April 22. Three candidates are entering the bi-election with the hope to replace Espat in the House of Representatives. They are Dr Osmond Martinez for the People’s United Party; Dennis Williams for the United Democratic Party and Wil Maheia for the People’s National Party. The Toledo East division is made up of twenty one villages and Punta Gorda Town with close to eight thousand registered voters.
