Grijalva Guilty of Destroying Ancient Monument

There was public outcry at the local and international level when it was discovered that a large portion of the Noh Mul Mayan Temple was destroyed. The marl from the temple was used to pave roads in a nearby village. Operation ceased when National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) officials learnt of what was taking place. Since then there had been an ongoing legal matter between Denny Grivjalva owner of De-Mar’s Construction Company of Orange Walk Town and NICH. Yesterday, the case wrapped up before Chief magistrate Anne Marie Smith. Grijalva, his wife Emelda and his foreman Javier Nunez were charged for removing parts of an ancient monument and causing the destruction of an ancient monument. Chief Magistrate Smith found Grijalva’s defense lacking where he stated that villagers had already commandeered the site. Chief Magistrate explained that she understood the outrage of NICH. Grivjalva’s sentence will be handed down later this week in Belize City.
