The groundbreaking of the Belize Marine Rescue and Educational Center took place in Gales Point Manatee Village yesterday spearheaded by Jamal Galvez. The Center will feature a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating endangered marine species like the Antillean manatee and sea turtles while serving as a hub for research, education, and community engagement. As the first facility of its kind in Belize, it will strengthen the country’s capacity to provide immediate care for injured marine animals, offer environmental education programs, and support scientific research to protect biodiversity. Located within the Gales Point Wildlife Sanctuary, an area renowned for its long history of conservation efforts, the center will protect vital habitats like the Sapodilla, Western, and Southern lagoons, and the Manatee River. As construction begins, this facility promises to not only safeguard marine life but also inspire future generations, connecting Belize’s rich biodiversity with sustainable economic and educational opportunities.
