COVID-19 – as we keep reporting it is just a matter of time before the virus reaches Belize.  Love News understands that earlier today there was a meeting today at the western border between Senior Immigration Officers from Melchor De Mencos in Guatemala and those in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, Cayo District.  The Guatemalan officers informed their counterparts that they will be banning European and Chinese Nationals from entering their country starting midnight tonight. While there is a ban at the Western Border on Chinese tourists, there are rumors of two persons in Benque exhibiting symptoms. We checked in with the Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero, who confirmed that there are no such cases in Benque.  On the international front, COVID-19 has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The announcement came this afternoon by senior officials at the WHO and was streamed live on their website.  A pandemic is a disease that is spreading in multiple countries around the world at the same time. The number of cases outside China have increased 13-fold in two weeks. Despite this, according to WHO’s Chief, Doctor Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, several countries have demonstrated that this virus can be suppressed and controlled. Denmark, for example, is set to close all schools and universities from Friday and will send home all public sector employees who are not in critical roles in the coming days. India has suspended most visas for foreigners until April 15. Love News was informed that Cabinet met in a special session today to discuss the situation and the Prime Minister will be briefing he country on their action plan in a press conference slated for tomorrow afternoon. In regards to our Ministry of Health, they have embarked on a bi-weekly webcast called “Ask the Experts” in which they will be answering questions asked by the public. The first episode aired today at 4pm and is available for viewing on the Facebook page of the Belize Press Office.
