While Belize has been marked safe in terms of having no cases of COVID-19, our neighbor Guatemala has confirmed their first case. This announcement came hours after a conference where the Guatemalan president cited that there are no reported cases. In a news article by the Guatemalan news agency, the President, Alejandro Giammattei, asked the populace to remain calm. The president indicated that this patient, a man from Italy, was transferred directly from La Aurora International Airport to the Villa Nueva National Hospital, to start receiving care. Three members of his family came on the same flight, and they are also being observed according to the sanitary measures implemented by the Ministry of Health. The president highlighted the work carried out by the authorities of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance and other state entities in matters of prevention by COVID-19. Likewise, the president reported that five people of Salvadoran origin, who came in the same plane, were returned to their country. The governor commented that the information will be expanded on a national network very soon.
