Guatemalan Nationals make bail for firearm offences

The two Guatemalans who were charged GUATEMALANS VO)  with several violations of the Firearm Act and were ordered to pay a hefty fine of over one hundred thousand dollars were able to pay the fines today.  Yesterday, five Guatemalans appeared before Senior Magistrate Emerson Banner; two pleaded guilty which led to the charges being withdrawn from the other three.  Bernardo De Los Angeles Franco Carias pleaded guilty for nine violations of the Firearm Act including kept firearm and kept ammunition without a gun license, extended magazine and prohibited firearm.  For the nine violations, Magistrate Banner ordered that Carias pay sixty six thousand and forty five dollars, forthwith. Meanwhile, Mario Rodolfo Lopez Moreira, pleaded guilty to a total of five violations of the Firearm Act. Magistrate Banner fined Moreira a total of thirty five thousand and twenty five dollars. The case is in relation to two incident, one took place on November 2, when police conducted a search at Golden Bay Hotel, Room 305 and found an assortment of guns and ammunition under a mattress. The other took place on November 1, when police were conducting a checkpoint in Hattieville, Belize District, where they came across a gray Dodge Ram.  A search was conducted on the vehicle which led to the discovery of guns, ammunition and drugs. However, the Guatemalans were not charged for the drugs when they appeared in court. Regarding their status in the country, the Guatemalans had gone to court on Monday to face immigration offences; they were fined one thousand dollars each.
