Guatemalan Nationals Remanded to Prison for Illegal Entry into Belize

Four Guatemalan nationals caught in Belize illegally were remanded to prison. 37-year-old Melvin Oseas Izaguirre Lopez, 29-year-old Esdras Soza, Sawqui Vasquez, and 34-year-old Dionicio Alfredo Ical Caal appeared unrepresented in the magistrate’s court where they were charged with illegal entry. All four men pleaded guilty and were offered bail of $1,000 each plus a $5.00 cost of court fine which they were ordered to pay forthwith. The men were not able to meet bail and so they were remanded to prison for 6 months each. Yesterday, the Belize Immigration Department Investigation Unit conducted checks at the Belize City terminal where the four men were stopped and asked to provide identification. The men provided Guatemalan identification and were escorted into custody where they admitted to entering Belize illegally through the banks of the Mopan River.
