A few days ago, Guatemalan President, Alejandro Giammattei, also address the UN General Assembly. During his speech, Giammattei referenced the Belize/Guatemalan dispute. Here is a portion of his speech- translated.
Alejandro Giammattei, President of Guatemala: “Today before this assembly I would like to reiterate once again my country’s firm commitment to constantly serve in the maintenance of peace around the world. I would like to reiterate that Guatemala is a democratic country and we are committed to permanently and equally resolve the inland and maritime territorial dispute with Belize. We hope to be able to have a good relationship with Belize for the peaceful resolution of our dispute based on mutual trust to ensure prosperity, tranquillity, and hope for our populations. Guatemala shares in the same hopes and challenges of our Caribbean kindred people to fight climate change and other challenges. It’s time to look further ahead and recognise the errors of the two great wars that caused so much suffering to the world.”
