The western entrance into Belize has been blocked since eight o’clock this morning. Our correspondent, Moises Martinez, spoke to some of the truckers in the area who say that the blockage is their way of protesting the significant increase in fees. Love News understands that the truckers who come to purchase corn and other commodities from Spanish Lookout are here two to three times per week. Each trip requires Covid-19 testing which costs them plus they are now required to be escorted by a Customs personnel which is an additional overhead expense for them. The Guatemalan drivers are now asking that the prices due to their frequent visits be revisited. Upon making checks with the Office of the Mayor of Melchor de Mencos we found that they are unaware of the protest. Meanwhile Belize’s Minister of Immigration and Foreign Affairs, Eamon Courtenay is out of the country on business and is unaware of the situation. We will keep following.
