The Ministry of Home Affairs continues to probe into the Belize Police Department’s gun registry. Last year, reports of a gun license hustle prompted the government to remove the Commissioner of Police as the sole authority and establish a gun licensing board. The body was tasked with auditing the current list of gun license holders to identify whether there were any discrepancies. However, we understand that the board has faced difficulty accessing information from the department. Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa was asked to weigh in on the matter and whether he was aware of the reports.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “I would have to get an update from the CEO on that Courtney. I do know that they met with the Auditor General’s Department last week as a preliminary meeting to establish the scope of the audit that will take place. So I don’t know what were the results of that first meeting, but certainly it was the initial meeting to get the audit going.”
The board is chaired by CEO of Home Affairs Sharole Saldivar-Carr.
