Gun Violence Erupts in Cayo Gender Reveal Party

The gun violence would pour outside of Belize City on Friday. Around 10:30 p.m., a resident of the Cayo District sustained gunshots during a violent assault on partygoers in Roaring Creek Village. Police say Daniel “Pickalo” Lopez was socializing inside a yard in the Another World area when a gunman opened fire on the crowd. Lopez sustained gunshot injuries to his foot and was taken to Western Regional Hospital for medical treatment. The assailant escaped before the police arrived. Kendra Pech, the homeowner, says the group was celebrating her daughter’s gender reveal when two men on a motorcycle passed by and began shooting.

Kendra Pech, Homeowner: “We heard the motorcycle coming but we thought it was somebody coming to bring something for us because we had sent to buy ice. When you look two young man came and they started to shoot up as they bend the curve they started to shoot about fifteen shots. Fifteen shots. All we could have done was run inside. I was already out here because I had just brought out some food for one of the young men, the same young man that got shot, I was bringing out the food for the young man. I thought it was fireworks first but it wasn’t fireworks. When I looked and saw the fireworks coming this way shining like sparks so I said this is not fireworks. When I looked the boys stopped there and they were shooting and shooting. All we could have done was run inside. When we ran inside everybody dropped on one another. When we looked the little boy was hollering and he had his hands on the ground. They came and disrespected my house because then they know we are not those kinds of people, you know better than that and it was only pregnant women, only children, only adults, old people, yes one or two young boys were around but that doesn’t concern us, that is not our priority. You all know  better than that. You know this house is not those kinds of people you understand ? But all I could say is thank God we’re alright.”

Lopez was later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment. He has since been released and stated on social media that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
