The violence continued from over the weekend into Monday night. A construction worker and his girlfriend were victims of gun violence while on Faber’s Road Extension in Belize City. 27-year-old Nelson Miguel and Talia Westby were inside a green vehicle when a sole gunman approached the passenger side and fired a barrage of bullets in their direction. Miguel received fatal gunshot injuries and passed away at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Westby received a gunshot wound to her leg and is now in a stable condition. The commissioner of Police briefed the media on the ongoing investigation into this latest murder.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “From what we have gathered is that this incident may have to do with some man. It’s a man issue and the suspect in question is in police custody he is the relative of one of the victim who was shot so he has been caught by the police during an operation this morning and I believe that the police should be able to gather sufficient evidence to lay charges against him for murder and attempted murder.”
The family of Miguel was still in shock after indirectly receiving the news of his passing but was able to speak to Love News a few hours later.
Family member: “We never imagined having- we see it on TV, we see it on social media but we never imagined it coming and knocking on our door so now that it is here it’s strange for us. Our family is very small and not one of our family member has ever died due to gun violence so you know it’s something strange so it’s still shocking. We’re still speechless and still asking a lot of questions. We didn’t see him during the pandemic and up to now. It’s so sad that he’s coming home in his permanent home in a casket you know that was not the way were planning for him to come home. My brother would never come home and complain abut what he does in Belize City or when he goes to trouble, he would never never one day come and say “Oh somebody is doing me this and somebody is doing me that.” But I cannot speak much about his life in Belize City I have repeated that over and ov er again, I don’t know where he lives in Belize City, I don’t know much about him in Belize City I can only speak about his personality here in Dangriga because so far that I’ve known him he has never gotten into any altercation with anybody here not that we the family know of.”
We also sought comments from the Westby’s relatives, but all our attempts were futile.
