They say dog is man’s best friend but in the case of Christian Gusenbauer his pet dog Mali is much more than that. Gusenbauer was on his private residence on Private Heaven Caye, some six miles off the coast on Placencia when he was attacked and shot by three intruders. Gusenbauer remains hospitalized and investigators continue their hunt for the culprits. And as the investigation continues, Gusenbauer is grateful for all the assistance he received after seeking help via his Facebook page but he is especially grateful to Mali because if it wasn’t for her act of bravery, he wouldn’t be alive today. Hipolito Novelo reports.
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: He survived that frightful home invasion on Friday and tonight retired Austrian Christian Gusenbauer is happy to be alive. Speaking exclusively to Love News on Monday from his hospital bed Gusenbauer explained that he has been living at Private Haven Caye on the Lark Caye range six miles off the coast of Placencia for about a year now.
Christian Gigi Gusenbauer, Victim: “I have no income since one year because it’s hard, we don’t get tourists. So basically I’m on my own vacation rental for tourists living out there on Lark Caye just with my dogs for one year trying to survive by hunting fish with my spear gun and drinking rain water.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: At the time of the attack when three armed pirates pounced on Gusenbauer, Malley, this brave dog was present. It was when the armed men pulled out their weapons that Malley decided to go on the offensive.
Christian Gigi Gusenbauer, Victim: “I’m giving her dinner. We walked out again so she can do her evening business and I’m walking down my steps and all of a sudden in the darkness, imagine you’re on an island on your own and right next to me three guys with arms and I did not know, I thought I’m dead right now and I can’t really recall what they said, it was like don’t move. My dog jumped at them and that gave me a second to react and it was just you know there is no bravery it was just instinct.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: Gusenbauer ran to one of his rooms and barricaded his door with a mattress as intruders shot at him. He sought help my posting on his Facebook page and as he did that he believed his pet dog had been killed.
Christian Gigi Gusenbauer, Victim: “My dog, don’t talk about that. I will cry the next time, you will have me crying all of the time. I thought that she died because she saved my life by distracting the guys, that gave me the second or two seconds when she jumped at them that I could run upstairs otherwise when they said “Don’t move.” and they raised their guns. I will shoot right now because I saw them but I heard the gunshots so I thought Mali is dead and then after everything was done and the police came. We tried to search the area. I mean I asked them if they could search the area. They said you have to go to the ambulance. We have to bring you back to the mainland and I said “No I won’t leave without my dog. ” Maybe it’s bleeding somewhere and we have to rescue her too.” but we couldn’t find her, we couldn’t see her.
Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News: But Mali was later found by fisherman Jason Westby. He had heard the terrifying event and believing that Mali had been killed he took it upon himself to find Mali’s body for it to be buried but he was happy when he found Mali wagging her tail.
Jason Westby, Fisherman: “The gentleman messaged me and told me that the dog got shot and so I messaged him back and asked him if I could go get the dog and bury her and he said go ahead and so I decided to go out there. When I got out there the dog was alive and the neighbors told me that they saw the dog run away from the scene. I went out there and I just waited with the police around until they left and the dog came out and that’s how I was able to bring the dog.”
Christian Gigi Gusenbauer, Victim: “I thought she was dead. On the other hand maybe because I can’t find her, maybe she made it . Then I received the message the next day that she’s alive. It’s just the two of us out there and yeah she’s a hero, she saved me.”
