Hail Hits Camalote During Heatwave as Sudden Storm Rolls Through

There was a rare weather occurrence this afternoon in Camalote Village, Cayo District. The country of Belize has been experiencing a severe heatwave over the past few days, and after weeks of no rain, today the downpour came in Belmopan and the surrounding areas.  While Belmopan residents were happy for the change of weather, villagers from Camalote were surprised when their rain was mixed with hail.  Eyewitness and resident of Camalote, Eldon Simpson in Camalote said small pieces of hail pelted rooftops and vehicles, leaving minor dents in car hoods. The rain and hail were also accompanied by strong winds, which reportedly destroyed a hammonds tree, and a wooden house

Eldon Simpson, Camalote Resident: “Well I noticed it when I came home to drop off my stuff, I noticed that when I got home I saw the trampoline on my roof. When I looked over to my neighbor’s yard I saw her house on the ground. Earlier part of the day I think we had a freak storm, hail storm I think, a gust of wind that blew over everybody’s garbage bins and my trampoline and my neighbors house that she was working on. The hail was not bad, it wasn’t huge hail it was small pebbles dropping but then the breeze was the one that was blowing very stiff. It blew over everybody’s garbage cans, flipped my trampoline on my store room and my neighbors house came down in that gust of wind.”

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The MET Office has yet to issue any report regarding this rare occurrence.
