Hattieville Resident Charged with Theft in Sofa Scam Case

A Hattieville resident remains in Police custody for allegedly scamming a woman into transferring money into a bank account for a sofa set that she never received. 26-year-old, Austin Alexander Williams, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in court where he was read a single charge of theft. Williams pleaded not guilty. According to prosecutor, Sergeant Christopher Smith, Williams is also wanted in the Dangriga and Cayo jurisdiction for similar allegations of theft. Additionally, Williams is indebted to the court in the sum of $555. In court today, the Chief Magistrate offered bail in the sum of $4,000 plus one surety of the same amount or two sureties of $2,000 each, with the condition that Williams must report to the Hattieville Police Station every Friday.  According to police, on Tuesday, a Belize City woman reported that on Monday of last week, she deposited $1,450 cash to an Atlantic Bank Account under the name of Veril Morris for a sofa set that she saw on a Facebook post under Nailea Nunez. After the deposit, she was unable to reach the seller on Facebook messenger or the WhatsApp number that was provided.  Police launched an investigation where they were told by 18-year-old, Nailea Nunez, that her stepfather’s nephew contacted her on Monday asking her for her banking information so that he could make a deposit.
