In the west, police are investigating a shooting that was caught on camera early on Saturday morning. Twenty-six-year-old George Requena was with some friends socializing near a popular nightclub in downtown San Ignacio when they were approached by a man he once called a friend. A verbal confrontation ensued and a shot was fired. Hipolito Novelo has the story.
Reporter: That was the moment that 26-year-old George Requena was shot. It happened on Saturday morning at around 1:30 near a popular nightclub in down town San Ignacio. The shooter shot him at close range with a .38 revolver, walked to his vehicle and then sped off. We are told that he drove all the way to Benque.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “This person took out a .38 revolver and fired a single shot at Requena causing his injury. We are still investigating this matter. This person has been identified to police and I will be at liberty to release his identity as soon as we have levied charges against him.”
Reporter: That person and Requena were once very close friends but the two parted ways and because of personality issues between them a shot was fired. Requena was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital.
ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Press Officer: “Investigators shared with me that it may have been as a result of jealousy. The assailant’s ex-common law was socializing with the victim and his family.”
Reporter: But contrary to reports it wasn’t a love triangle it was simply that Requena reportedly did not choose the shooter’s side in an ongoing family dispute.
Family Member: “The bullet traveled from one side to the other and ruptured his intestines so right now the doctors are saying that we need a miracle and we need prayers because he’s in a lot of pain.”
Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: So he is in a critical condition ?
Family Member: “Yes critical.”
Reporter: The shooter is expected to be charged soon.
