Head-On Collision Kills Orange Walk Man in Guinea Grass

A man lost his life in a road traffic just after one o’clock yesterday in the Orange Walk District. Police say 32-year-old Carlos Landaverde was travelling in a Chevy pickup truck on the Guinea Grass Road when he was involved in a road traffic incident. Landaverde was heading toward Orange Walk Town when the driver of a black Ford Explorer SUV reportedly swerved into his lane, causing a head-on collision. The impact caused major damage to the front portions of both vehicle and left Landaverde with severe injuries to his head and body. The Guinea Grass villager was then transported by bystanders to the Northern Regional Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Police say the black SUV was driven by 20-year-old Osmar Garcia, who was accompanied by 23-old Melvin Urizar and 63-year-old, Dean Herckland. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero spoke on the incident today and noted that police remain uncertain as to what caused the collision.

ACP Hilberto Romero, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “Upon their arrival they saw a white Chevy pickup and a Ford Explorer vehicle with extensive damages. Carlos Landaverde was the driver of the extend Chevy pickup. He received several injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford Explorer was identified as Oscar Garcia, an NIP was served, urine sample was taken and the file will be prepared and sent to the DPP for directives.”

Garcia received injuries to his legs and right foot and Urizar sustained scrapes to his arm, face and left ankle. Meanwhile, Herckland, who was seated in a back seat, escaped the incident unharmed.
