Health Minister says the NOC will not be reinstated

The Briceno administration says the National Oversight Committee will be no more.  There was no grand announcement on the decision, but rather it was revealed following questions from the media in yesterday’s press conference.  Health Minister Michel Chebat says they are taking a different route and approach.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness: “What we have done Mr.Vellos is that in addition to the technical team at the Ministry of Health and wellness that is advising on COVID we have also constituted a team of doctors and technical persons who are advising the minister and the ministry directly in terms of the steps that we ought to be taking with this COVID pandemic. And so at least that is the the model that we’re gonna be employing going forward at least on this next six month basis.”

With the new Covid-19 restrictions announced yesterday and with the arrival of tourists via the Philip Goldson International Airport the Minister was asked if the decision makers had taken into account the effect they would have on tourism.  Here was his response.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness: “We have taken into consideration the effect it’s gonna have on the overall economy and just to make it clear we’re not shutting down the restaurants that is not the regulation. The regulation is to limit the number of persons who can be in the restaurant at any one time and to limit dining in, maybe dining in and outdoors is an oxymoron- but what it is is we want to stop in house dining in close spaces. Again we’re trying to ensure and to lessen the human interaction and that is why we are just allowing outdoor dining at this time, restaurants that have outdoor facilities and again it is not a shutdown of restaurants other restaurants will be allowed to have take out.

Reporter: And will gyms open on Monday ?

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness: “No. Unfortunately that is not the recommendation at this time.”
