Minister of Health Pablo Marin is in the news tonight after being the victim of a home invasion last night. The 52-year-old Government Minister was at home at around ten thirty last night when he heard noises in the lower flat of his house. He made checks and moments later came face to face with a robber who had ransacked his home. Minister Marin fired a warning shot followed by two more shots that injured the intruder. He was notably absent from today’s press conference with the Prime Minister.
Rt.Hon Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize: “Following a home invasion that he suffered there was a shooting he in fact shot the person that broke into his home and that person died. Of course the police are conducting an investigation after which as I understand it their report will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for her determination. All I will do this afternoon is to express my utter and complete solidarity with my colleague Mr. Honorable Pablo Marin and I will leave it at that.”
Police later found the body of the burglar in an empty lot nearby. The thief has since been identified as 37-year-old Arkel Matura. While the Prime Minister would not get into the details of the home invasion, Police Commissioner provided the media with the preliminary details of the case.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The burglar bar was removed from one of the windows and some louvers were missing. He went outside around the building and when he came back inside on the veranda he was accosted by a lone individual who was brandishing a knife. Mr.Marin said that he ordered the person to put down the knife and the person charged at him. He fired one shot to warn the person and when he did that the person turned around and stooped down as if he was going to pick up or do something and he subsequently fired two more shots and after having done so the person got up and jumped over the fence which is about eight feet in height and may have landed on some concrete things that is on the other side of the fence. Police were called and the body of the individual was found right across the fence of Mr.Marin’s yard. Police also found the knife beside the fence inside Mr.Marin’s yard and so based on that Mr.Marin was taken into custody, he was interviewed and subsequently released pending further directive from the Director of Public Prosecution in respect to this matter.”
Commissioner Williams says investigators are still canvassing the scene and until further details are revealed to him he cannot state whether force was justified or not.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “The police is canvasing the area still to see if there’s any surveillance footage in the area. I was not there, I’m sure the family members were not there, it would be a matter of what Mr.Marin said and what the police found on the scene and at this time I don’t see no reason to dispute whatever unless evidence to the contrary is shown and so I don’t want to be here as if we’re trying the matter. If it is that Mr.Marin’s action is deemed to be unjustified by law that will be determined by the DPP then it goes to the court and we’ll see where it goes from there. From what I’m told that there may have been one but it is not working and the police have checked it as well.”
The incident occurred in Corozal Town. Love News understands that the Scenes of Crime personnel did find the lower flat of the minister’s house ransacked and on the scene they collected three expended nine-millimeter shells. Reports have confirmed that the minister’s nine millimeter Glock was licensed.
