Health Ministry Issues Antibiotic Resistance Warning, Urges Responsible Use

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is calling on Belizeans to do their part in the fight against antibiotic resistance, by using antibiotics responsibly. The ministry issued a public notice today explaining that antibiotic resistance occurs when these medicines are overused or misused, leading to a depreciation of their effectiveness. The Ministry has urged Belizeans to only take antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents when prescribed by a registered doctor, ensure that they take them on time, and complete an entire course of antibiotics even if symptoms are gone or they feel better. The ministry also warned against sharing antibiotics with others or taking antibiotics that were prescribed for someone else. The ministry is also working in collaboration with the Belize Police Department and the Customs and Excise Department to crack down on the sale of illegal antibiotics.
