The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) is closely monitoring the spread of new world screwworms in Belize, given its potential to infect people. The ministry says it is in constant dialogue with the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA), and is keeping a close eye on how the situation is unfolding. To date, however, there is no need for concern or panic. Dr. Melissa Diaz Musa, Director of Health and Wellness, confirmed to Love News that the discussion has begun between and among local officials and that they will continue to monitor the situation.
Belize has since confirmed 33 cases in various animals across four districts, with concerns that it could spread further. The parasite, which affects warm-blooded creatures, poses a serious risk not only to livestock and wildlife but also to humans, making it a public health issue. Several months ago, two persons died in Costa Rica after becoming infected by the new world screwworm.
