Health Ministry Rejects Claims Platelet Shortage Caused Newborn’s Death

The Ministry of Health and Wellness has moved to clarify public concerns surrounding the death of a newborn at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), stating that a reported lack of platelets did not contribute to the baby’s passing.  In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry expressed condolences to the family of Jenny Pinelo on the loss of her baby and rejected media claims suggesting that platelet shortages played a role in the outcome.  According to the Ministry, between January 15 and January 22, a total of 76 units of platelets were delivered to KHMH upon request. On January 21, the hospital requested 18 units, which were immediately supplied. A further request for 23 units on January 22 was also honoured without delay. The Ministry says all platelet requests related to the patient were met promptly.  The statement further explained that blood issued to patients does not necessarily come directly from replacement donors, noting that blood products have a shelf life of up to 90 days and are centrally screened and stored to ensure immediate availability. While relatives are encouraged to replace used blood, once a medical practitioner makes a request, it is honoured.  The Ministry also assured the public that the Blood Bank of Belize is fully stocked, with no shortages of blood, blood products, reagents, or supplies, and that blood drives are conducted continuously nationwide. It added that all public hospitals, including KHMH, maintain adequate stock levels, including on weekends, with a medical technologist always on call.  According to the mother, jenny Pinelo, her daughter, Joy, spent most of her short life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at KHMH.  Joy was born on January 4, and diagnosed with duodenal atresia, a serious intestinal blockage requiring emergency surgery. While the surgery was reportedly successful, Joy later developed sepsis and critically low platelet levels. Her mother says she was never informed that platelets were unavailable as her child’s condition deteriorated.  According to Pinelo, the most critical days of her life, and the blood bank was closed.  The bay died on January 19, after suffering seizures and internal bleeding. Her mother is now calling for round-the-clock access to blood products, strengthened NICU resources, and improved communication with families during medical emergencies.  Responding to public outrage, Dr. Shanika Arnold of KHMH acknowledged the broader strain on the national blood supply but defended NICU staff.  She pointed to high demand from multiple emergency cases, including neonates in septic shock, trauma victims, and emergency C-sections. She stressed that NICU staff remain deeply committed to their patients and urged the public to donate blood regularly, not only in times of crisis.  The family says Joy’s death has become a call to action.//////////
