Health Ministry Secures New CT Scan for KHMH

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is finalizing the procurement of a new CT scan machine to improve diagnostic services in the country. The machine will be installed at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City by next month’s end through the efforts of Health Minister, Kevin Bernard. The vital machinery will allow doctors to make more accurate diagnoses and provide better care to patients. The announcement came in February this year, which led the opposition to criticize the government for the time it has taken to get this crucial piece of imaging equipment in the country. In response, Minister Bernard says that while it has taken them some time, they are getting it done.

Kevin Bernard, Minister of Health and Wellness: “The last time KHMH got a CT Scan was under the PUP administration in 2002. Now the machine worked for a couple of years and around 2010 or so it started to give trouble. Now 2010 the UDP was already in government. They did nothing to even fix the machine. They did nothing to try and procure a new CT Scan. It is a PUP administration that is now securing a 128 slice Fuji brand CT Scan machine for KHMH. Now you might say “why did it take so long?” well we are now at the stage where all the main works have been finalized because you know the room has to be very very protected because you don’t want any exposure and the sensitivity and the electricals that had to go. I know that the supplier mentioned that they had to invest another $50,000 in terms of redoing a lot of the electrical just to ensure that it meets the requirement of the Fuji company. We’re also ensuring that when we sign that agreement to get the CT Scan through the supplier that it comes with a maintenance plan, a five year maintenance plan so the supplier is to ensure that there is a plan to maintain. I’m not sure the full numbers but I know from their diagnostic team everybody from the diagnostic team that works within that are that has the training to do CT because remember you have different kinds of diagnostic so they are the ones that are being trained. Fuji had brought people in country and I think that they were able to take some persons out. The timeline now is that by the end of January we should have that CT Scan machine installed and ready to go and provide the service for the Belizean people. That’s the hope and plan that we have. In fact the machine is already almost in country.”
