The Ministry of Health & Wellness issued a strong advisory urging the public to avoid contact with floodwaters due to the heightened risk of infectious diseases, chemical hazards, and injuries. As communities continue to manage the aftermath of recent heavy rains, the Ministry emphasized that exposure to contaminated floodwater can lead to a range of ailments, including wound infections, skin rashes, stomach illnesses, tetanus, and severe waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever, cholera, leptospirosis, and hepatitis A. In addition to waterborne illnesses, the Ministry also highlighted an increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases due to the rise in stagnant water and potential breeding sites following the rains and floods. The public, particularly those in or traveling to affected areas, is advised to take precautions against mosquito bites, which can transmit diseases like dengue. The Ministry of Health & Wellness underscores the importance of these preventative measures to safeguard the health and well-being of all Belizeans during this period.
