Yesterday we told you of the development confirmed by the Centre for Disease Control as it relates to the ZIKA virus and its transmission through sexual activity. We also told you of the statement by the World Health Organization, declaring the ZIKA virus a global public health emergency. Today, the local authorities in Belize issued a press release following a regional video conference that health officials and members of foreign affairs took part in. The meeting, organized by the Government of Honduras, which currently has the presidency pro-tempore of the Central American Integration System (SICA), was aimed at discussing the regional health implications of the ZIKA virus and to coordinate regional positions and actions to minimize the number of infections as well as confirming a sustained action plan geared at eradicating the virus. As it relates to the microcephaly disease which is linked to the ZIKA virus and causes babies to be born with under-developed brains is one that the Pan American Health Organization has committed to assist the region in its response to eradicate the virus. The release wrapped up by stating, quote, “The Ministry of Health has engaged in a country-wide campaign of spraying and assisting in the removal of possible stagnant water that are breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito that is also a carrier for Dengue fever, Malaria, and Chikungunya. The Ministry is also finalizing the national preparedness and response plan to combat the Zika virus.” End of quote. Taking part in today’s video conference were Health Minister, Pablo Marin; his Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ramon Figueroa; Chief Executive Officer in Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Lawrence Sylvestre as well as the Director of Health Services, Dr Marvin Manzanero.
