High Court vindicates former Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association Vice Chairman

Former Vice-Chairman of the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers Association Everaldo UK says he has been vindicated after the High Court of Belize ruled in his favor. On Friday, Justice Genevieve Chabot delivered a ruling in a matter where a claim was brought by the association against Uk and nine other expelled members. In 2020, Uk and the others were removed from the association by board members, who claimed they were the rightful leaders. In 2022, the association then filed an injunction to restrain the men from stating they were a part of the association; however, the men filed a counterclaim. Last week, Justice Chabot ruled that the association had breached the bylaws established in 2015 by electing members of the Board of Directors through zone elections. Uk says the judgment will now see him and the others return to the association and spoke about what sparked the legal matter.

Uk says the men were awarded damages by the court for the period they were not able to deliver cane under the association but are not in agreeance on the amount.

Uk added that his expulsion from the association is being challenged in another matter before the court.
