Historic Day: Contract Signed for San Pedro General Hospital Construction

A contract for just over 33 million Belize dollars was signed this morning for the construction of a general hospital for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.  The contract was between the government, the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Overseas Engineering & Construction Company (OECC).  The plans to construct a hospital on the island was revealed in July last year.  According to Prime Minister, John Briceno, today is a historic day for the country.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “For us today this is a historic day as we sign this agreement to finally start the construction of the hospital in San Pedro Ambergris Caye. This is a project that will be serving both San Pedro and Caye Caulker and we want to express the gratitude of the Belizean people, myself as Prime Minister and the Government to both you and James – your government to the president for the grant of $16,678,680 US that will allow us to be able to finally build a general hospital for what we refer to as the Mecca of tourism in Belize San Pedro and also Caye Caulker. This is something that for many years successive governments have been talking about, about seeing the need and wanting to build the general hospital but finally it is coming to fruition, it’s finally becoming a reality and certainly I want to thank your government Ambassador and James to you and your company. I’m certain that we are going to have a first class building and facility that can serve our people and also the tens of thousands of visitors that come to San Pedro and Caye Caulker.”

Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize, Her Excellency Lily Hsu, spoke briefly at this morning’s signing, expressing honor at being a part of this milestone in Belize.

The funding for the construction is being provided via a grant from the Taiwanese Embassy.  Love News understands that the groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place in the coming weeks in the south end of the island.  It is expected to be completed in two years.
